The Malignus demo, explained

It is free, it is the beta test, and Mossbomb says it contains everything in the current game. It is also not a promise that your demo dungeon will survive into Early Access.

On this page

The Malignus demo is a free, separate Steam app that gives you the current development build. Mossbomb describes it as the beta test, not a cut-down vertical slice: every system in the build is available, with nothing locked because it is a demo.

That makes it unusually useful for a pre-release game. You can test the colony loop, the boss select, the trap wiring and co-op before deciding whether the $19.99 Early Access price is justified for you.

Demo facts

Confirmed

  • Free on Steam as a separate app (app ID 5407640).
  • Released October 19, 2026, ahead of the November 13 Early Access launch.
  • Contains everything in the current game, according to Mossbomb.
  • The demo is also the game's beta test.
  • Online co-op is listed on the demo's Steam page; the full game supports 2–4 players online and on LAN.
  • Mossbomb says the demo stays up until Early Access starts.

Not announced

  • Whether demo saves can be transferred to Early Access.
  • Whether the demo will remain available after Early Access begins.
  • Whether every co-op configuration in the full game is enabled in the demo.
  • Whether the demo build will receive further updates before launch.

What is included

The demo is not a tutorial-only slice. Mossbomb's press kit describes it as holding everything in the current game, and the demo's store page repeats that it is the free demo and beta test. The major systems confirmed for the current build include:

  • Four Boss monsters: Cinder Demon, Dread Lich, Baleful Eye and Sunken Horror.
  • Six minion races: goblins, kobolds, orcs, gnolls, bugbears and ogres.
  • Dungeon building and colony management: rooms, workshops, beds, storage filters, food, gear, duties, grumbles and behavior settings.
  • Traps and wiring: ten trap mechanisms visible in the official build menu, five trigger families and a wiring system.
  • The dark arts: Pyromancy, Electromancy, Necromancy and Shadowmancy, plus rites, bookshelves and the Altar to the Gravecaller.
  • Adventurer invasions and prisoners: six adventurer races, ten classes, more than 40 traits, capture and interrogation.
  • Overworld raids: a hex map, scrying, farmsteads, monster packs and real-time raid control.
  • Co-op: online co-op is listed for the demo; the full game supports 2–4 players.

Because the game is unfinished, “everything in the current game” also means the current bugs, placeholder balance and incomplete polish. Mossbomb's Early Access answers explicitly warn that players should expect some bugs and balance changes.

How to play the demo

  1. Open the Malignus Demo page on Steam.
  2. Install the demo through the Steam client. It is a separate app from the full game.
  3. Launch it and start a new dungeon. The official New Dungeon flow has three steps: choose a Boss, choose starting minions, then choose the world settings.
  4. Before you build, read the top bar: day clock, resources, Unrest and Invasion status. The current build shows those at the top of the screen.
  5. Use the build categories along the bottom: Infrastructure, Storage, Production, Furnishings, Traps, Power and Dominion.

We do not have a verified step-by-step of the demo's exact menu path beyond the screens shown in the official kit. The beginner's guide covers the systems that matter once you are in.

Saves, co-op and limits

Save transfer is not confirmed

Mossbomb has not announced whether demo saves will carry into Early Access. The demo's content scope does not settle that question. If you build a dungeon you care about, keep the demo installed until the developer says otherwise.

Co-op is part of the current build

The full game supports single-player and 2–4 player online and LAN co-op on one shared dungeon. The demo's Steam page lists online co-op. Specific co-op details — drop-in, save ownership, pause behavior, role permissions and difficulty scaling — have not been published.

The demo may disappear at launch

Mossbomb says the demo stays up until Early Access starts. That is not a promise that it will remain available afterward. Do not treat the demo as a permanent free version of the game.

Performance and requirements

The demo's Steam page lists the same published specifications as the full game: Windows 10 64-bit, 8 GB RAM, a GTX 1050 Ti / RX 560 class GPU with 4 GB VRAM, Vulkan support and 3 GB storage at minimum. The recommended target is 60 fps at 1920×1080 in a busy colony at 3× speed, with a six-core CPU, 16 GB RAM and a GTX 1660 Super / RX 6600 class GPU.

Mossbomb notes that the largest colonies and battles depend most on single-core CPU speed, and that integrated graphics need an AMD Radeon 780M or better with 16 GB RAM. Intel Iris Xe is below the minimum. The full requirements page has the complete table and a baseline checker.

Should you try it?

Yes, if you are curious about the game and can tolerate an unfinished build. The demo is the best available way to answer the questions a store page cannot: Does the minion management click for you? Is the trap wiring readable? Does the interface make sense at 1080p? Does co-op work with your group?

Wait if you want a stable, balanced first experience or if you know that losing demo progress would bother you. Early Access is close enough that waiting a couple of weeks is a reasonable choice.

Reception snapshot, not a review score

On November 1, 2026, the demo's Steam page showed a Mostly Positive user review summary with 78% of 92 reviews positive. That is a storefront snapshot for the separate demo app, not this wiki's review and not a prediction of the full game's reception.
